Maureen Bowers Psychotherapy

Maureen Bowers, Ph.D.
I am a clinical psychologist licensed in Virginia. I have experience working with adolescents and adults who may be dealing with poor stress management, relationship distress, chronic worrying, low motivation, irritability, self-destructive behavior, or life events such as occupational difficulties, loss, or adjusting to parenthood. I can also help identify when the present-day problems may be related to trauma or may reflect long-standing relationships patterns.
I have been a therapist in college counseling centers, psychiatric hospitals, and private practice.
I obtained my PhD from Catholic University. I completed my pre-doctoral internship at Howard University Counseling Service.
What I Offer
Online Sessions
We can meet online or we can meet outside (see walking therapy). I view the therapeutic process as a collaborative exploration. I provide a safe space, you bring what is on your mind, and we take it from there. I also believe that the relationship that we develop is more valuable than any specific tools that I can offer. Although I will offer tools or recommendations when that might be helpful! There is often an aspect of therapy that involves problem-solving for things that are happening in life right now, and we will do that too, as it comes up.
Walking Therapy
There is much research to support the psychological benefits of being in nature, as well as the impact that exercise has on mood and stress reduction. Qualitative research on pscyhotherapy that takes place while walking in nature has shown that there are unique benefits such as deeper connection and less power imbalance in the relationship. I am located in Virginia Beach, with access to several different natural areas where we can take therapy outside, when the weather is fair.
